I really enjoyed the premise and liked the characters a lot but something still just fell a little flat for me. I think it was the writing - it wasn’t that great and I felt it didn’t do the story justice. For such an interesting world and characters, it should have hooked me more, but because I am invested in the story, I will continue the series, especially hearing such great things about how the trilogy finishes.

2020: 4 stars

2024: Re-read with Sasha. I looooove this book and I am so emotional about it. Re-reading this was such a good choice. The depths of the characters, the nuances, and the foreshadowings are that much more pronounced.

Jade City is a fantastic introduction to the world of Greenbones, and does it through some really engaging characters, all of whom have really impactful character arcs. This book is just the right amount of violent, following the battles between rival gangs. The characters motivations and reactions feel very grounded as they try to navigate their lives in this city, and the twists of what happens to them continue to surprise and feel satisfying through the whole book.
