I enjoy Jennifer McMahon's writing style. This one just didn't resonate with me. There weren't very many people in this story that I actually liked. The balance of sympathetic victims to unsympathetic ones was a bit off. Also, the mystery took too much work to get interesting and the backstories were dull. I really liked the Winter People. While this one was a miss I'd still happily read another of Jennifer McMahon's books. I look forward to it actually.

Jennifer McMahon has a way of writing stories that feels like your childhood best friend whispering you a secret.

This is my second book by the author. I enjoyed my first endeavor, The Winter People, but I liked this one so much more. The characters were easy to connect with and there were plenty of twists and turns. And it had a good creepy feel like I used to enjoy when I read old Stephen King books back in the 80s and 90s.
The story moves between three time frames and a few different POVs, which made me wonder if I'd be able to stay involved and connect with any of the characters. I was hooked pretty early on and stayed that way.
The narrator is Cassandra Campbell who did The Winter People (and Orange is the New Black, among other things) and I already knew I enjoyed her work. A good reader makes a world of difference.
So I definitely recommend this one!

It was a good read, it kept me interested from start to finish, it is a mystery and supernatural mixed book.

This story is comparable to a vacuum. I was so sucked in. I mean, the very beginning starts off with the creepiest chant as a woman is walking up the stairs with an ax.
