gritty and bleak and just so constantly sad… but i loved it. there is a pervasive feeling of hopelessness in this book; there really is very little joy. it works, though. the sensory experience of this book is mighty, which makes this read all the harder. despite this, you still find yourself loving agnes, just as shuggie does, just as you can tell stuart does. i think the moment i found most devastating was when she went out with eugene after her party. that was so tough to read. stuart did that scene so well. i think this is a book i’ll be thinking about for a while, and shuggie is a character i will always love and feel for

Shuggie Bain…I’ve never been so glad to be done reading a book but I had to finish & couldn’t stop! Lol This book isn’t for the faint of heart…there are so many layers of disfunction, I don't even know where to begin.
As much as every piece of this book will tug at your heartstrings and make you pray for hope, I am very glad I read this book because it is one that I will never forget.
