It was…ok. I liked the historical aspect of the book. But the characters needed much more depth and overall the story wasn’t as engaging as I expected it to be.

Meher recommended this to me. Loved it. A few great quotes:

"While at the same time an age-old weariness sapped your will, and worst of all, you had to confront the insidious suspicion that all this sacrifice might be in vain"

"One day they would need to have the discussion about how long mourning lasts, how long the dead are allowed to haunt us"

"It was the anguish of divided love, separation, of living and dying far away from one's loves ones"

Isabell Allende went back to her roots, beautifully written book with characters full of life, soul, virtues and defects. I was moved.

This was a beautifully written book. It follows a family of Spaniards fleeing General Franco's war. They find refuge in Chile, A Long Petal of the Sea. While in South America, political unrest continues as nations experiment with different styles of government. The Dalmau family experiences upheaval and persecution, but the miracle of love and life keeps them moving forward.

This is an incredibly moving story and I'll remember this family for quite a while!

This is the first of Isabel Allende's books that I've read, and although historical fiction isn't my usual preference, I was hooked early on.

I kept being reminded of Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruis Zafon, but I enjoyed A Long Petal of the Sea much more, especially the female characters and how trauma was presented.
