emotional hopeful informative sad medium-paced

I have heard such amazing things about this author and this was a part of history/the world that I knew little about, so I was very excited to read this book!

And it started so well...I really liked the part about the Spanish Civil War. The author did a good job of intertwining character development and history and I felt like this was going to be very good.

And then her style seemed to change. She had a lot of history to get through and so time would speed by. I felt like there would be a dump of historical research, where we would all of a sudden get lots of details about the actual historical people and what was happening. And then she would remember she had fictional characters she had to mix in, ang d she would speed through the perspectives of a bunch of characters and their timelines (...and she reacted this way, and he was doing this, and that character died, so sad, and this character was doing awesome, so happy, and these two were very in love, and this is a list of reasons why...). A character we were introduced to and started being developed would kind of get brushed to the sideline and just touched on for the rest of the book. (like the Chilean super religious mom...and the smuggler...etc. etc.). For me, this just left me wanting more. More actual history, more character development, more connection to the story.

Bummer.

meaty! Allende examines social structures, the ideologies of fascism and socialism, the displacement of refugees, the brutality of concentration camps, and what it really means to be family all in one long, impactful narrative.
fast-paced

I have been loving historical fiction, however this one was hard to follow. Involved lots of Wikipedia rabbit holes about the Spanish Civil War and political history of Chile. Very entertaining story and characters. Drags at the end.

ENGLISH REVIEW

It has been a long time since I've read a novel with such human and endearing characters. Allende's style captivates you from the start, chronicling both the good and the bad with the same attention to detail. When I finished reading this book, I had the feeling that I had won, and at the same time lost, a few friends.

Many parts of this book are hard to read because of the historical circumstances, but you always make it through thanks to the characters, who even though they aren't perfect people, they are three-dimensional and interesting, even those you don't like. You follow various people over the course of their lives, and they change and grow, some for the better and some for the worse. It's absolutely fantastic.

This is the first novel by Allende that I read as an adult, having read the trilogy of [b:Memorias del Águila Y El Jaguar: La Ciudad de Las Bestias, El Reino del Dragon de Oro, Y El Bosque de Los Pigmeos|34626037|Memorias del Águila Y El Jaguar La Ciudad de Las Bestias, El Reino del Dragon de Oro, Y El Bosque de Los Pigmeos|Isabel Allende|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1518143670l/34626037._SY75_.jpg|2250756] as a teenager, and her prose is as brilliant as I remember. One of these days I will reread the trilogy, but for the time being, I have more of her adult novels pending.
