In the words of Layala herself; holy shit. I did not see that coming. This character development and story progressing had me hooked. Beautifully written and had me yearning for more. I need a book 3

I couldn’t put this book down! Wow… just wow. The tension… pffft. And then again the cliffhanger

There was just so much I was disappointed by in this book.

Mainly is probably that the characters just didn't feel like themselves.

I found everything with Thane and his father tedious. He already killed him once, and now that he has come back and is arguably more evil Thane is having second thoughts. To the point that he is borderline defending him to a victim of his brutal torture (Layala).

Layala was not great in this book either. She was keeping all these secrets about the dark mage because reasons I guess. Then when she does admit it she just drops it in front of the entire group? So it either was super private and intimate or it wasn't.

I didn't like the severed mate bond stuff in this book. It feels like a regression. Not only that but it's feels so frustrating that the entirety of book one was spent trying to break the bond. Then at the end of the book one it was decided to keep it, and right after that someone else just finger snapped and it was gone. So book one was about getting rid of it, then two is largely about getting it back? It just feels like spinning in circles.

The sirens were cool. I liked that part. I like that Layala had to make a hard choice about who to save and it actually effected her after.

The dragon shifters were cool too. I enjoyed the world building in this book. I guess I just didn't really like the characters.

The end though.... ughhhhhhh. What even was that? They're all actually gods in a twisted love triangle?? Like wtaf. The whole battle was stupid. And Thane being all up on his high horse about Layala hurting his sister even though her torturer was literally tormenting her with the potential murder of her only family? Like wtf. And also the fact the Evelyn left in the first place to go 'home'. I knew from the second she left she was gonna get captured again. And then Layala decides that her revenge is the most important thing and ignores everything and everyone and just does what she wants. In the middle of a battle. So selfish and just dumb.

They are all dumb and this plot was dumb.

Good, but not as good as the first. The writing kinda went downhill and I swear to god if I have to read the sentence "he/she/they want to hump you" again, I'm going to pluck my eyes out. Such middle school writing like just say fuck for the love of god.

Both the first book and this one are basically five star reads. They are pure perfection. I love everything about them. It was so easy to read. Both Thane and Layala are adorable and so cute together. Their banter, their dirty talk and every other interaction are pure perfection. I was afraid that now that Layala embraced the bond between them they wouldn‘t have the same vibe and banter but it was better than I anticipated. And the whole crew was so fun. I loved that Thane got jealous so many times and his possessiveness. Those scenes were so fun to read about. Especially when Layala and Piper had to seduce Brunard and he couldn‘t do anything about it and could not intervene and had to restrain himself.
The last scene was so full of revelations. It was so mindblowing wtf. I am so hyped. Can‘t wait for the next book.

The hole in my chest from this book continues to grow

I will not know peace until I have the third book in my hands, and depending on how evil Mrs. JM Kearl is, the void may actually end up consuming me. (Haha, see what I did there.)

Sometimes I wish I would've stopped reading at Chapter 43 of BBTEQ.. However, there was no way I could've stopped.

In fact. I sat down to read July 14 at 8:30 with a friend. We started on chapter 38 finished it, and then began LLTEQ. Together we read to chapter 9, but I continued until chapter 13 or 14...

I can't remember exactly which chapter, but I knew I wasn't putting it down until Thane and Layala were reunited.

I ended up finishing the following day. I literally could not put this book down.

Let's not even discuss how I've pushed people into reading not just the first, but both books, because.. well.. I couldn't suffer that huge cliffhanger by myself...

And boy do I have theories...
The introduction to the love triangle has me extremely nervous.
I am so scared that all the times Thane told Layala that he would find her in every life, is foreshadowing.
I'm also wondering how Thane will treat Layala after she threw that silver star at Talon. I can see the queen plotting to have her killed for that one.

Overall, to say I'm happy with this book is an understatement. To me it is right up there with Fourth Wing... as long as the love triangle doesn't get in the way

I am so ready for book three. Thankfully I don't have too much longer to wait.. at least what I've read, I shouldn't but there could always be a delay. And in all honesty, if there is one I trust JM Kearl enough to know that it's what's best for the storyline.

I can't wait to read more by this author. Even if it's not part of this series.
