I waited too long after the first book to read this one. It took me a while to remember what had happened previously, who was who, and what was what.

But once I put two and two together, I found the continuation to be smooth and satisfactory.

The cast has great banter, and friendship. Even when they meet new characters, the group is welcoming and intelligently politically strategic.

Not much of an improvement from the first book. I do like the writing style, but there just seems to be something missing for me plot wise. I had to really push myself to finish and refrain from skimming. The ending was kind of random but i guess a good plot twist? No major praise or hate here - It was decent for a quick read.

I liked this one!
I didn’t love the foreshadowing of thane betraying her and her not ending up with him (before the big reveal at the end) but I did love how absolutely savage Laya was. What a boss move to hit his sister in the neck with a throwing star

It was really hard to get into the book. I almost stopped multiple times but finally at around the half way mark I felt like I could keep going and finish. I’m normally able to guess what will likely happen but the ending was one I didn’t expect and would make me read the next book.

This book series is full of unexpected twists and turns that kept me engaged from start to finish. I loved Layala's growth as she discovered her hidden power, and Thane's viewpoint chapters were a great addition. J.M. Kearls' writing is superb, with a fast pace that never leaves out important details. I found myself invested in the characters and feeling anxious for them as the plot unfolded. Book one had a romantic focus, while book two was more of an adventure with romantic elements. As for the audiobook, I thoroughly enjoyed the narrations by Bridget Bordeaux and Jake Bordeaux. They did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and keeping the story flowing smoothly. Their voices were easy to listen to, and they captured the emotional depth of the story perfectly. Overall, I highly recommend both the book series and the audiobook narrations.
