US Papercutz translation is kind of bad. The jokes don't translate.

Everything is well in our village of superpowered Gauls. Too well. This has caused Caesar to face criticism for not being able to take care of his conquered lands. No one insults Caesar and lives to tell about it. So he tasks an agent to travel to the village and sow discord amidst the Gaul, adopting the ye old 'Divide and Conquer', strategy.
-------

Careful Caesar, if you piss of Brutus too much, things might turn...drastic.

-------

Tortuous Convolvulus, the agent that is sent, does with words what Cacophanix does with his songs.
ax15-3
With half truths, misdirection and subterfuge, he manages to discredit Asterix and Getafix, and split the village making them ripe for the taking. How will our heroes deal with this civil unrest? Find out in this week's As-te-rix!
-------

You know, I was sort of disappointed in the story. With how things were going I was expecting an epic confrontation between Cacophanix and Convolvulus, the two forces of nature on either side. More so, when it ended in the same Gaul bashing Roman sort of way. But hey, at least we got some sweet, sweet war legends. I'm pretty sure I had a village like that in some online strategy game.
ax15-6

Also, Holy fourth wall breaking, Impedima!
ax15-4

There is a lot of confusion which is spurned by the aptly named Convolvulus' winding schemes, which end up putting his own side as well as the Gauls in chaos. But all resolves well after an epic battle, and a good sprinkling of magic potion. 4 out of 5

Full disclosure, I grew up on this series so my opinion is necessarily biased.

I'm of the view that there is no such thing as a bad Asterix book ... but some volumes, like this one, are pretty good.

As a child, I often borrowed this volume from the library. As an adult, I'm still happy to pick this one up.

A brilliant story and the heroes don't even have to leave their village to find trouble. Trouble finds them in the form of Tortuous Convolvulus, a little man whose very presence seems to incur jealousy and mistrust as he knows just what to say and do to cause rife.
Lots of infighting with the Gauls in this one that shows off their insecurities and hidden resentments. A couple more character introductions with Geriatrix's wife (who, although is a staple for the rest of the series is never named) and Fulliautomax's wife. With all these ladies now established, it's rather fitting that they get their own brawl.

These books are full of bright, fun and delightful characters who go on various adventures and get to beat up a bunch of Roman soldiers. Accompanying the story and the characters is a plethora of clever puns and word play that the translators should get a medal for. There are always a few gags or phrases in Latin that may mean nothing to the non-Latin speakers (such as myself) but Google can lend a helping hand there.
