Slow to start and definitely not for those looking for deep intrigue or action, this is one of the most brilliant fictional accounts of mental illness I've ever read. The characters are fleshed out because they are made real in the visceral banality of their lives, the depression and anguish, mania and glory, brought forth from the words in a way that sucks you in and helps you more fully understand what goes on in those suffering as the main characters do. In the end, there is a deeper appreciation for life and the myriad ways of how through difficulty there can be found peace.
