Not bad, but it's no Jurassic Park. :-P

I think my overall opinion of this book is it was…fine. Crichton’s plotting is as good as always, and it’s clear he’d mapped out the whole plot. The concept is pure Crichton, as well: a group of nerds who are brought in to work on a new technology which then wreaks havoc (due to corporate greed) and there’s a bloody race to survive and get home before they’re all picked off one by one.

It was just the line-by-line execution. I get the feeling that Preston didn’t want to add too much to the book, preferring to keep as much of Crichton’s writing intact as possible. And that makes sense. This is the first book that was completed by another author after Crichton’s death, and the dude had big shoes to fill.

But the writing feels VERY 1st draft in so many places. I wish Preston had done a BIT more to smooth out the writing. There’s so much unnecessary repetition throughout (like a character will see a tree and then go, “Hey there’s a tree,” and they’d all turn to look at the tree).

But with that said, this book DOES have a certain cheesy B-movie charm. There’s plenty of really inventive and horrifying body horror stuff, and the pacing kept me genuinely engaged, even when I was chuckling at the clunky dialogue. Early on in the book, I was saddened that the book was looking to be a disappointment, but by the end, I’d gotten used to the goofiness and just let myself enjoy the ridiculous adventure. I don’t know if I’d highly recommend this one, BUT if you’re a die-hard Crichton completionist, I’d say you can read this and enjoy it for what it is: a ridiculous gory thriller that’s aware of its own campy charm.

This is the first novel I am reading in a very long time. And my first of Michael Crichton’s work, though he is only a co-author on this book. I felt it was a great introduction for me to Creighton‘s work and to this genre of novel in general, I was initially intrigued by the concept, and also the detailed descriptions and information given on the natural environment of the plants and jungle. I loved the concept of the characters being miniature and exploring earth on a micro level however, I felt that the size of the characters was hard to relate to and imagine, and therefore was not immersed as I could be, and sometimes left confused by it. The plot also points became repetitive and seemingly unrealistic even in this fictional world. I specifically was very annoyed by the Daniel characters actions, and was unsatisfied with the ending of the novel as I felt it wrapped up sloppily, and the romantic ending wasn’t needed. However, the book did a really good job of keeping me interested in wanting to know what happens next and it did a fantastic job of surprising me, particularly by killing off certain characters at unexpected times. Overall, I really loved the novel, but I felt that the characters could have been developed better and not the ending should have been written differently.
