The characters sort of blurred together and I was really struggling to stay focused while I was reading.

The promise of this story had so much potential, but it just didn’t deliver for me.
This story focuses on two alternating perspectives - one of a military unit lost in the for in the 1600s and another of a modern day group of women seeking to discover the history of the lost military group. This story sets you up to expect dark twists and monstrous beings as both groups discover the fatal mysteries of the woods. It seemed to me to have a feel crossed between Annihilation, though not science fiction, and The Blair Witch Project. However I quickly discovered that while the set up of the story gave these vibes, the execution just didn’t keep me interested or deliver enough mystery and excitement for my liking.
To be honest, I didn’t find much of this story to be memorable. I found that the scenes describing the monster and the hardships and horrors the characters experience tended to speed through too quickly and not give enough detail to really give them the scare they ought to have delivered. And I felt the deterioration of some of the characters relationships, especially the women in modern time, occurred to quick. By the end I felt both that the horror aspect of a dark woods was sped over and therefore this read was not all too memorable for me. The ending just didn’t wow me either to elevate the rest of the issues I had with it.
Overall, I really wanted to like this book based on its premise, but it was not a book written for me after all.
Thanks NetGalley and Revellion for an ARC of this book.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really waffled on what rating to give this one, because it was such a solid folk horror tale right up until the end. The relationships between the women, as well as their characterization in general, could have been fleshed out a bit more -- I felt like some of their decisions were confusing and disjointed from how they'd been presented up until that point.

Disappointing. Wide cast of characters in two simultaneous timelines. Unfortunately none of the characters really stood out it had enough depth to really invest in but an intriguing plot nonetheless.

I was intrigued by the premise of The Dark Between the Trees, I love creepy woodland vibes so this sounded right up my street!
The story pans across two different time periods in which we follow a group of soldiers in 1643 who are isolated in Northern England, they make haste to Moresby Wood to seek refuge but that is not what they find. Fast forward to the modern day five women led by Dr Alice Christopher set out to find out what happened to those soldiers.
Moresby Wood itself is an unnatural place, there’s talk of strange things afoot! Back in 1643 seventeen men enter the wood, only two are seen again, and the tale of what happened makes no sense. Stories of shifting landscapes, trees that appear and disappear and something dark….
Dr Alice Christopher and her team are tested and are led to question the old tales of Moresby Wood, the unexplained happenings they experience against what they know to be logical and true.
I found this to be gripping with plenty of cliffhangers, the creepy vibes were great! I do wish that it had been a bit longer and more spooky but maybe that’s a good thing since I can be a bit of a chicken. Nevertheless, a good book and one I would recommend you to pick up.
