Joe Simpson is that rare thing, an adventurer who is an intelligent and skilled writer. However the early chapters of this book seem bitty and lacking in coherence. It gets much better but I feel like there is a superior book in here, combining his Eiger experience with his reflections on mountaineering and losing his appetite for danger. Still, I got a really good sense of the mountaineering world and of Simpson himself, warts and all.

I remain entertained by the way Simpson portrays his experiences in the extreme conditions of challenging mountains. His resilience post-injury, determination and narrative are excellent.
