When parallel universes collide, things can get messy. Each version of Kat Garcia comes from a parallel universe with its own unique problems. When each discovers a portal into another universe, they learn that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. They each voyage to other universes in order to try to fix their respective worlds, but endanger the multiverse in the process.
In “Kat Cubed,” Lesley L. Smith not only constructs a compelling science fiction story but also explores the dangers of climate change and oppressive governments. Set in the not-so-distant future, each of the parallel universes presented in this book is a terrifying possible reality for our own world. Unlike Kat Garcia and her parallel selves, however, we cannot count on a portal to another universe opening up. We must save ourselves.

Kat Cubed by Lesley L. Smith in this story we are introduced to three different characters but all who are the same. In one universe there is Kat, in another universe there is Kaitlin and in a third universe there is Katherine. In Kat Garcia's world only the Rocky Mountains are above sea level and the sun is hot enough to kill. In Kaitlin Garcia's world the Unified States is constantly bombarded by severe storms. In Katherine Garcia's world only draconian government control over the citizens has kept the droughts, floods, and diseases from killing everyone. In each of these girl’s worlds life is different. In Kat’s world they must survive by struggling and only going out at night because of the heat of the sun during the day. There is no medicine, medical help is unavailable to them, and people leave on missions and never return. In Kaitlin’s world global warming has affected the world so much that most of the coast that we know of today is gone and they are constantly bombarded by strong super storms that destroy and decimate with the power that they have from the warmth of the world. In Katherine’s world the people are ruled by the government and it is only by them following the strict rules implemented that has kept them from falling into the same destruction as the other worlds. But one day Katherine’s work with her science machines and computer creates portals that lead to the other universes and in seeing the differences they try to help and create an imbalance that soon destabilizes each universe and threatens to destroy them all. Now all three girls, their families and friends must come together to save it all or die trying.
Kat Cubed is the first book by Lesley L. Smith that I have read and it is a very interesting and engaging science fiction dystopian novel that focuses on climate change but in a way that is truly engaging and draws you in. Each character is similar yet different in their own unique ways. Kat struggles to survive with her friends while waiting for her father to return from a mission. They have no power where she is at in her world and they must only go out at night because of the dangers of the sun. In Kaitlin’s world things are a bit better but not by much. In her world there are dangerous storms that constantly bombard the world while Kaitlin and other students, professors and scientists all over the world attempt to find a means of balancing out the rays of the sun so that the world can attempt to become stable again. In Katherine’s world life is better even though the government rules with an iron fist. Climate change and global warming are just as bad. Nanobots are prominent in keeping tabs on the people and the danger of a failing planet becomes more real every day. When Katherine, in her research of trying to find a way to help the Earth by reflecting some of the light from the sun she accidentally opens portals to alternate universes. Wishing only to help they each create problems that destabilize all connected.
Each girl is different but yet the same you and you quickly see the similarities between not just each girl but their friends, family and worlds. I really like how these girls while each are different none of them run from the responsibility that they have to take on when it comes. Even when faced with death and severe punishment from the government itself they stay strong and push forward. Things are not easy for either girl but they never stop pushing forward. There is constant danger all around them but they never throw in the towel and complain about how it’s too hard.
I really like and appreciate how each whenever there is a transition between on Kat to the next the author distinguishing by identifying them by universe so that we can keep up. When it’s going chapter by chapter it’s really easy to follow and keep up. But when it gets deeper into the book you have to start paying more attention because the transitions begin to happen in the middle of the chapter and if you’re not careful you might get caught unawares.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. It engaged me right from the beginning and had me wanting to know what was going to happen next with each of the girls. Climate change is something that I worry about and that concerns me for future generations and this book really makes you think. This is definitely a book that I would tell people to check out and read. It’s a work of fiction but it has some pieces of truth to it as well and elements that should concern us. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Definitely a really good read. Two thumbs up for a job well done.
