This one left me feeling very indifferent. Understanding how important this book is in the general sphere of Science Fiction I can totally see how someone would see this as their favorite science fiction book, and I definitely respect H.G. Wells especially for the time that this came out. The fact of the matter is that I do not think that in almost all cases innovation and uniquity are not equivalent to quality. I found most of this read rather boring. Wells does a good job of portraying these fictional experiences and is definitely admirable in sharing his emotional perspectives about these situations, but this is not something I'd be dying to go back and check out again. I am however glad that I finally got around to reading it.

"In the end, it was not guns or bombs that defeated the aliens, but that humblest of all God's creatures: the Tyrannosaurus Rex..."

Wow what a fucking book. I can see how this spawned, effectively an entire subgenre? Of works? Deeply in turn with the literature and political realities of its own time, and yet still filled with a vital energy and suppressed emotion suitable for modern readers. It felt like I was reading the real memoirs and reports of any number of real survivors of real nightmarish calamities. The chaos, the uncertainty, the bizarre coincidence that borders on madness, the scrabbling awful random death that the teller has no right to escape, the enduring disquiet even years later of knowing that your life is never your own...

Also, just, great premise. Love the aliens, their every detail is carefully married to the commentary they present, the oddity of their design, and many of them even hint to the reasons for their inevitable downfall. Despite never having a single speaking line in English, they are as full of character and life as the more charismatic of horror movie villains.

While the many many adaptions doubtless each have their own charms, and some are certainly worthy successors, there is no reason to not *also* read this book.
