I liked the Tom Cruise film. Ashamed to say I barely recall the novel.

The book was more about how the protagonist dealt with the Martian invasion-survival, escape, murder, the thought process than about the Martians themselves. While I enjoyed the book, I was a little disappointed about the ending. The ending was indeed unpredictable, an intelligent alien force with advanced technology that succumb to mere germs that we are born immune to, who would have thought? But I was really looking forward to some fighting or bloodshed (do these aliens even have blood? probably not). Especially since I thought it was foreshadowed by the artilleryman's plots. It seems as if he would be the hero in that story but it was quite elaborate.
I sort of knew that the whole we have to raise our kids to be better than us, and infiltrate and learn alien technology to finally rise up and beat them down, was just a fantasy of mine, but I did want it to happen. Regardless, this was a fascinating read, especially considering the time in which it was written, and I can see why this is deemed as a classic.

This book has been called a sci-fi classic, and I can now say that it has rightfully earned that title. In a relatively short number of pages, this novel manages to tell a trailblazing story for the time it came out; a story which established a lot of the expectations and archetypes that people expect from the sci-fi genre, specifically in the alien/invasion sub-genre. Even though it may seem a bit basic and outdated when compared to contemporary sci-fi, on its own, it's still an enrapturing narrative that captures the mystery, fascination, and dread of humanity facing off against a truly foreign alien threat. It also just fun to see what a man from the 1890s imagined a war with extraterrestrials would be like.
Now, one little disclaimer. This book can be at least a little hard to understand since it's written with names, slang, and descriptions from 19th century English; but if you managed to understand and enjoy some of the classic books you had to read in high school, then the language shouldn't be much of a problem.

I've never "really" read this book, just the student version, which I'm sure was heavily abridged. It. Was. Awful. Need to find a copy of the original text now...
