mysterious reflective sad tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character

well this definitely took a turn I wasn't expecting. reading this on a flight with my mouth wide open bc 1. did not expect the incest ?? and 2. the ending... just wow.

reading this felt like I was in a dream with its vivid descriptions and almost empty characters that seem like a mystery which I personally enjoyed. I thought this would center more on mystery and the translation theme, but the abstract finish as to why this 98th story results in suicide was pleasant.

fast-paced, "weird", unorthodox stories are my favorite, and the combination of an introspective and heartfelt telling of different sorts of love made this a pleasant read.

Beautiful prose and looks at how people cope with death. Always gorgeous to read her work

My favorite book 4ever.

Don't really know what just happened but I was quite swept away by it. It's such a richly written story I'll definitely read more of her work but I think I floundered in trying to keep up with the emotional complexities and unpredictability of these characters. Would make a cracking movie I think, something of the magnetism reminded me of the calmer parts of Burning.

I Am Once Again Unable To Determine If I Loved A Book Or It Just Had A Perfect Ending.

i have a baby's sense of object permanence.

my brain also turns off every time i encounter incest in any book at all. even when i know there's a deeper meaning there, i become completely unable to process words. where normally my thoughts at the time would be, you know, reading the sentences in front of me, instead it's like "no no no no no no no no no no no no no."

but i know that is on me. and i know this book was good?

this review is confusing. if it helps, i'm confused too.

so it's kind of an immersive experience in that way.

bottom line: good and bad and good again?

reading books by asian authors for aapi month!

book 1: kim jiyoung, born 1982
book 2: siren queen
book 3: the heart principle
book 4: n.p.

Subtly dark and sweet it was a fresh read. I can feel myself in Kazami's heart, each encounter with Saki, Otohiko, and Sui a wild hurricane of emotional colors. At each turn of page I am eighteen again, dwelling in these adulthood crazies. Thank you, Banana.

At first, it was exciting and intriguing because it talked about uncommon topics like incest, lesbianism, and suicide. However, over time, I became disengaged with the characters and indifferent to their weird antics and other oddities. "Kitchen" is far better than this book.

Kitchen is one of my favourite books but I really struggled with N.P. Didn't particularly enjoy the incest and suicide themes but I will carry on an read Banana's other books.

Yeah... not for me. This book felt very empty and flat despite an amazing plot idea, I thought it would be spooky but no, there is just gross elements like incest thrown in there for... idk? shock value maybe? But the writing style is so flat it just bored me, it's a very short book and it was still a struggle to get through because I was so bored.
