My favorite part about this book was the way that Allende writes women characters. They are dynamic, magical, romantic, strange, and drivers of the story and their own lives. I loved how each woman had a complicated relationship with the leading man, balancing his violence and cruelty with the lives they'd built with him. The story builds slowly, culminating with a desperate political situation that seems like it will be rushed to resolve before the end of the book - yet, I found the ending satisfying and sensical for the remaining characters.
