Nobody describes love, passion, lust, hate and desperation like Allende. I cried to a scene of someone giving birth. I will continue to read everything she has ever written, it’s heartbreaking and healing at the same time.

(REMIND ME TO QUOTE WHEN I CAN GET MY HANDS ON MY BOOK AGAIN)

I enjoyed this book. It weaves together five generations of an unusual and powerful family with the history of an evolving country. I enjoyed the magical realism elements and the matter-of-fact handling of brutality as part of life. It features some hateful characters with little self-awareness and much entitlement who never really take stock of those they doom with their violence. I appreciated the characters having different names but still, the multiple viewpoints and many characters make the story require active reading to stay enmeshed in the story. It is a fascinating and quirky story and well worth the read.

A complex book you can really sink your teeth into. Its has a very intricate storyline with characters whose lives and goals are very intertwined and a treat to get absorbed into. It also has a very interesting story going on at first in the background and then in the foreground about the Chilean political history from the rise of president Allende to the overthrowing of the left wing government by the military coup and Pinochet's reign. A good i will recommend for anyone who is looking for a sory they can lost in.
