House

Ted Dekker, Frank E. Peretti

Not sure what I expected with this being one of those books where two established authors combine their ideas and talents. This did start well, with a slight Texas chainsaw... and Haunting Of Hill House vibe. It did slow down halfway where I thought it was possibly going to change or see other things come up in the narrative. Still a number of entertaining surprises and surreal twists before the end. Try it if you enjoy haunted house tales, Poe or some classic Stephen King.

I expected it to be more thrilling since it is co-written by Dekker, but the good-vs-evil plot was very well written (kudos to Peretti). It was kind of slow in the composition, but I appreciated the time aspect of the novel, though. It brought another dimension to the sense of urgency in the story.

I really wanted to like this book...

The first half of the book has all the elements of a good story. I thought the character development was sufficient. At first I thought that the story was going to be a little Texas Chainsaw Massacre mixed with X Files.

However, as the story started to come to an end it didn't seem like it was making sense.

***spoiler***

The reasoning didn't make sense. For example, the house was a reflection of the sins of the couples. How could the house look the same after being modeled after 4 different people? Also, the demons couldn't be killed because they weren't really there, but they could kill the people if they had weapons?

My biggest issue with the story is the little girl/ angel person. how did she get there? She kept saying that Jack was listening to her, but she wasn't really saying anything. Then the whole "resolution" wasn't really a resolution at all.

really disjointed I felt.

Oh My God this book was awesome. It was so intense and hair-raising that I had to read it every night to see what happens. I would definitely recommend this book. Can't wait for the movie to come out in April I already have it pre ordered.

So, I made the mistake of only bringing this book on a week-long camping trip.
It was a really big mistake.
This book was dull, badly written, and forced. And that's the good stuff I have to say about it. The characters were so badly handled that I had trouble reading it. They had no depth and could have been left out of the story with no major impact.
It deals horribly with abuse victims and is an insult to published works.
I wish I could have rated this 0/5 but unfortunately that isn't a choice.
Save yourself the time and don't read this book. Don't even pick it up. It's not worth it.

Meh. Did anyone truly enjoy this ? Idk it just wasn’t there for me. Maybe too supernatural, maybe too fast? I’m not really sure. I kept reading bc I wanted to know how it ended which was an okay finish. Maybe I rushed through it.

I got 75% through this book and had no idea what was happening. I couldn’t follow anything that was going on and ended up giving up and just letting it go.

I finished this in a day or so. Just terribly disappointing. There is seems to be a lot of potential there, but the writing is, well, lazy at best. The long and drawn-out Christian allegory aside, there was just not meat on the bones here. The main characters run into what should be seriously mind-bending situations but have, basically, no reaction to them. Meh.

This book was soooo good! I wasn't expecting all of the twists and turns that were in it. However, the ending? Not so good. I expected a stronger ending to such an amazing story.

11/30- I'm re-reading this book for a project. Hopefully I'll like it even more than the first time I read it.
12/06- Definitely much better the second time.

This started out good. I whipped through the first third of it in one sitting, finding myself (uncharacteristically) a little creeped out in my house at night alone. Everything is trite, no surprises at all, no character development to speak of, and the "bad guy" is evident from the very beginning, but I WAS really enjoying it. After a while, though, it started to drag -- ironic for a book in which everyone is constantly in some fast motion: whirling, darting, running, etc. No one ever just *walks* anywhere in this or sits still, or even "turns", it's all over-the-top action words. Eventually, it began to spiral down into heavy Christian overtones. Curious, I flipped the book over and noted, on the back down by the ISBN was the category "Christian Horror". Oy. Had I known, I likely wouldn't have bothered. It did get very, very preachy very quickly and I really had to drag myself through the end of it. Shame.
