Elements of Mischief is perhaps the strangest book I have ever read. Raunchy (seriously-its a 5 flame read for sure!), funny, and filled with strange paranormal creatures, this book had me rolling my eyes at the bad "dad jokes", but totally engaged (which took me by surprise for sure!)

Arizona's grandma dies and she inherits the house. Said house is hella old and in major disrepair. She has no working toilets! She calls a plumber and the rest is history! She doesn't know about the magical, supernatural world before being thrust into it and then finding out the entire world around her is magical. Her best friend is a slutty werewolf and the 4 hot plumbers are elementals.

Elements of Mischief is a reverse harem story, so Arizona has 4 (maybe more....;) ) soulmates that she is now linked to. This activates her power as a spirit elemental and she is thrust into a world of danger and intrigue. But, the perks include having her 'pipes cleaned' by her 4 hot plumbers (yeah, there are SO MANY plumber puns...). Then her judgmental grandma comes back to haunt/help her, and she finds out a lot about who she really is (aside from being a total commitaphobe)!

Like I said, this is a 5 flame read for sure. Its erotic romance. In between the erotic romance reverse harem plot line is the hilarious jokes and strange PNR world that James and Stunich have created. Oddly, this book totally worked for me. But, I will say it again-its a level 5, so its not going to be everyone's cup of tea. But, if you are okay with erotica, reverse harems, an insane amount of puns, a werewolf who loves pink PVC, and a slut shaming grandma ghost, Elements of Mischief might just be the most enjoyable story you read!

It was fun. It was silly. And didn't take itself seriously in the slightest. Honestly, it was a good time. Also, the recurring joke of "I was a barista, not a *insert random profession here*" kept making me smile.

So this was my first reversed harem book and I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to read the other two books and see how this story ends.

I’m not the biggest fan of reverse harem but every so often a synopsis will have me picking up another reverse harem book. Such is what happened with Elements of Mischief, the first book in the Hijinks Harem series. To me, it sounded like a book filled with things I enjoy – humour, supernatural happenings, and a series worth being addicted to – meaning I was happy to face the reverse harem if the other elements interested me.

Surprisingly, the revere harem was my favourite thing about this book. I did not expect it to be, I never thought I would claim such a thing, yet it is the truth. The reverse harem element was wonderfully steamy, and I didn’t mind it anywhere near as much as I usually do.

My issues were with the rest of the book, and how it let me down.

At first, I thought this would be a humorous read. There was plenty of inappropriate humour to be found, many plumbing jokes, and I was enjoying it. Sadly, it quickly grew old. The jokes were repetitive and desperate. I started by chuckling, then I was rolling my eyes, then I was groaning, before I found I didn’t care for the humour any more. It was too much, ruining the effect. The occasional joke here and there would have been wonderful, but as it was I grew tired of reading the same jokes over and over. I mean, I get it – pipes.

The supernatural element could have been a lot of fun, but it felt a bit all over the place at times. Some elements sucked me in, but I felt as though there was too much and not enough explanation. As our leading lady was new to the world, I would have expected more detail to be fired in her direction – if not, I would have liked for her to ask for it. As it was, she seemed to roll with it far too easily. There were plenty of things I wanted explaining, things I wanted to find out more about, but I was left with quite a few gaps in my knowledge.

I possibly would have considered reading the next book to see how things developed had I cared for the characters. As it was, I didn’t care for them at all. I couldn’t tell you the names of any of the males, I couldn’t tell you how to differentiate them, and due to that I see no reason to continue with the series. It was not the addiction I had been hoping for, even if I was surprised by the reverse harem element.

Overall, I was disappointed by this one – it really could have been so much more.

Lots of fun

This is a light hearted book that don't take itself too seriously. It's such a fun ride with characters and situations that have you laughing.

*Honestly, I just want to read a reverse harem. Ohohohoho.

*Ari should have shouted in their faces: "Do I get a choice!?!"

*Really, those assholes needn't strong-arm her into the quint. What happened to wooing and courting?

There were far too many awful plumbing gags which stopped being funny after one chapter. The characters, particularly the protagonist, are not very fleshed out.

One of my pet peeves with paranormal romance is inactive protagonists who wait around for the action or problem to come to her and this book had it in droves! Bad things just happened to Arizona without her lifting a finger to prevent them.

I am not a fan of this book and definitely won't be continuing to read.

This was quite a disappointment. After binge reading all of the Kit Davenport series last June, I immediately fell in love with Tate James as an author. I just finished Groupie by CM Stunich today and like damn that also blew me away. But Elements of Mischief?? It sadly dropped the ball.

There wasn't enough of a plotline to save this one. I was constantly confused by the random supernatural elements of the world and the weird attachment the guys had with Ari as soon as the met her. They basically saw her, decided to claim her as theirs and then moved in. Bada bing bada boom. There was no tension and it didn't even seem like Ari liked the guys all that much.

The whole book was a sex party. Which is fine, but there was no overarching conflict that caught my interest. Or at least not one I could follow well enough. This book also had way too many plumbing jokes. Some were funny, but after about 100 pipe jokes, I was over it. The series has potential, but I don't think I want to invest my time in it.
