Both books took longer than they had any right to.

I really enjoyed the first book, but I couldn't even finish this book. Pierce add new characters who confused the story because they weren't developed. I kept needing to refer to the index in the back every time I didn't recognize a name, I shouldn't have to do that while reading for fun.

I liked this one even better than the first one, and that doesn't often happen for me with sequels. Aly really grows up a lot, and I loved seeing how she adapts and changes and grows. Her relationship with Dove is nice, and her shift from toying flirt to being in love felt real. And of course, there's all the spy stuff, which was so exciting.

The overall story in this and the first book was pretty good, although it’s hiiiiighly improbable for a 17 year old to be an amazing spymaster, even if her dad taught her. She’s a little too perfect at this right out of the gate. Also some suspect white saviour stuff going on with Aly. Other reviewers have noted that the discussion around slavery is not great! There’s just a lot of clunkiness around everything. At least her love interest isn’t twice her age for once even if he is literally a crow who can turn into a man. I don’t know why I keep reading Tamora Pierce books when they keep bothering me.

Enjoyable, but nothing special. Very much a continuation in the same vein as Trickster's Choice.

I'm done! I've read all of my Pierce books. Thought it would take me more than the two months to finish Tortall Legend series. This isn't a bad series but the earlier books haven't aged well. To much surprise, Beka Cooper trilogy is probably my favorite.
