Really quick read but packed with exciting plot lines and a character (dog) who you’re simultaneously scared of but are also rooting for. I really liked the development of Buck, I think it speaks well to the flexibility/ability we have to adapt to a situation. Also great metaphor for reconnecting with the “wild.”

Jack London is an incredible writer with an amazing vocabulary and talent. His descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness are really remarkable and the reader gets a good impression of both sides, the absolutely stunning and beautiful side of the remote and untouched nature and on the other hand the danger that comes with the remoteness and the extreme conditions. I really loved the style of writing, although it is a bit challenging to read. I especially liked the story “call of the wild” in which you get a good impression of the hard life up there in the north at this time and it was also very emotional and exiting to read.
But the other short stories weren’t really my cup of tea. Especially “Diable The Dog” I found very unrealistic and disturbing, which of course could have been intended, but in my opinion was a bit over the top.

This was my choice for 2020 Banned Book Week. I had read some of the stories when I was younger, but it was worth a reread.

Okay, I just couldn't stay focused on this book. I read it but not 100% sure I actually comprehended it. It wasn't bad, but I just couldn't focus. The story was good. I will have to give it another try in the future.

I always thought this book was for kids but it is dark, so very dark. Featuring the kidnap, brutalisation, starvation and near death of a dog called Buck. Buck is totally awesome, the best animal I have ever read off in a book.

London does an amazing job of showing the brutality of nature and even more so brutality and love of humans. I am sure many people have cried over scenes in this book.

The selected stories in this book are also great, some are so sad showing how far man can go to survive.
