This book definitely deserves a five star rating, it takes a lot to put everything out there like Amanda does in this book and it was so incredible to read. I got to meet her a week ago (4/18/13) for a brief moment and got my copy signed and it was honestly just so amazing.
Before I read In the Water They Can't See You Cry, I read this quote from it: "Sometimes success is simply being willing to give it your all," and I took it to mean that in order to be successful or the best at something, you have to put yourself into it absolutely, 100%, but now upon finishing the book I see a different meaning in it. I see it now as saying that to be successful, all you have to to is give it your all, all that you can give at that point. It doesn't matter that if you were younger or older, or if you didn't have to do this or that, you think you could have done better, and to let go of the things you have no control over. Maybe I'm not making any sense. Anyway. To put it simply: you don't have to be the best as long as you try, and I think sometimes we forget that. ♥

Loved it! Great look at the life of an elite athlete and reminder that they are normal people too and have issues like the rest of us.
As an ex-swimmer, I loved learning more about Amanda's story. And there's some great behind the scenes information about the Olympics.
A good pick for people interested in swimming and/or the Olympics.

Classic story but still inspiring and a good read.
Loved her story! I felt like I felt everything she was going through. It was hard to put down, I just kept wanting to find out more and more!
Fairly boilerplate memoir from a star athlete, but I can only imagine the courage it took to get this all in print. I wish there had been more of what it takes to be a world-class athlete, but that would defeat the purpose. Self-help, semi-salacious memoir and a winning athlete — all in one. Enjoyable overall. And good for her.
Very interesting. It must have been really tough to tell the world the struggles she went thru. Everyone assumed she was so well put together and didn't really have to work at anything but this book revealed a totally different story. She put on a face for the public and no one knew what happened behind the scenes. Many athletes have body image issues and was glad to see her bring this to light and hopefully it has helped others. I like how she thought about her job as a model that the sexy photos weren't who she was just a job. She is a tough lady and glad to see things are working out better for her.
Despite the length of this memoir, I walked away not feeling as though I knew Beard any better than I did before. Overall the main issue with the book was the writing, it was rather shallow and contained some of my pet peeves (such as using "could care less" repeatedly). There was far too little insight into the swimming world and the Olympics. Instead the focus of the book was Beard's relationships, which were not terribly healthy or interesting. Ultimately the book lacks depth in detail and writing.
Unlike others, I actually didn’t know who Amanda Beard was (maybe I just didn’t watch the swimming events
