The biggest disappointment was the ending -
I struggled to connect with most of the characters, who all felt disconnected from each other and emotionally distant. What was clearly meant to be powerful and emotional didn't land for me at all. The only character I genuinely felt bad for was Drew.
The adult behavior throughout was pretty appalling, and nobody seemed to actually communicate with their children. The parenting across the board, including Katie and Eric, was questionable at best. Whether this was intentional commentary on competitive youth sports or just poor character development, it made for frustrating reading.
Abbott's writing has its moments and the mystery did hook me initially, but the execution couldn't sustain my interest. It's fine, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There are better psychological thrillers out there that actually deliver on their emotional promises.
