I think this suffered a bit from second book syndrome. All in all it felt like the plotting overtook the development of the cast of characters Brightwell has assembled. They're still two dimensional although inherently likeable. Hopefully the next instalment will redress this.

Another short, fun Victorian-set mystery. Really starting to like these characters a lot.

At the very end of the previous book Luty Belle Crookshank asked Mrs Jeffries and the gang for help in the search for her friend Mary Sparks. This book takes off from there with them on the hunt. Meanwhile, detective Witherspoon lands another murder case and the two obviously turn out to be linked, but not as obviously as you first think (thankfully). Witherspoon continues to be the most naive detective and is so easily led by people I'm surprised he can function in the real (real fictional?) world, although he did seem to have a few more wits about him this time. I enjoyed the twists in this and the multiple suspects that weren't narrowed down till late in the book. Although I did identify the mystery decomposed 'body' pretty early on I don't think it was really meant to be as big a reveal for the reader as it was for the characters.
This book just seemed to have a lot more twists and goings on than the previous instalment. The character development continued at a nice pace and the new characters for this story were well written. I really hope we see more of Luty Belle in the rest of the series and I look forward to continuing the series.
