DID NOT FINISH: 24%

While I liked the idea (being able to travel to alternate worlds, but only if the version of you died there) the execution is poor. I never really understood what was going on. And the main character was very annoying in the persona that was portrayed.

Amazing story that kept me hooked the entire time. Very clever and thematically resonant. The romance is so well done, too, even with it not being the main focus of the story. I’m so blown away.

I had no idea what to expect from this novel, but it was such a complex and engaging journey!

The writing, with the worldbuilding specially, captured my attention right away. The concept of ~the space between worlds~ and how only certain people could reach was very well developed and intriguing. Cara, as a main character, was a very complicated person? But fantastic narrator. Experiencing the story from her perspective made things more dynamic and, to an extent, mysterious. She had already been through so much and, as the plot progressed, changed as a person while still holding true to her core beliefs.

The twists and turns throughout were also very!!! exciting. I loved how Johnson dropped some impacting information here and there and then made sure to connect it all in jaw-dropping moments. During the second half, I was more invested in the scheming and betrayal than all of the mechanics of different Earths. It was so satisfying to see how it all wrapped up and that, despite all the shit that happened, there was still a little bit of hope at the end.

I do think I need to mention the romance? There was a sprinkle of it; it showed up in different ways and between different people and all of it added to the plot. I would say this was more about the love one feels towards family and friends and themselves than anything romantic, but still. Very nice!

Interesting premise but the pacing is off and not a lot actually happens. It is a sci fi that is focused on a handful of characters rather than being a space opera or going into great detail about the world etc. Overall a meh experience but I would read from the author again.
