This book deals with an extremely important topic that needs to be voiced and discussed. That said, as a piece of work itself, I liked it so-so.

I did not get along with the narrative structure, I found the rapid-fire succession of chapters (supposed to show different genres and narrative styles) too much disjointed and confusing. The writing style is a bit too much experimental for me.

I liked much more the chapters that were "essay-like", exploring queer history and theory. However, I think that this mixing of informative chapters together with more literary and elaborately written ones was a bit jarring, it felt like two different books mashed up.

wow wow wow. i picked this book up bc i thought it was a horror story, and i wasn’t wrong! my first memoir and it was about queer domestic abuse. i loved how informative it was, and diverse in its prose. my favourite part was the choose-your-own-adventure segment (it wasn’t really, which was the point) and the majority of this book being second person pov was surprising but also really helped get me into her story. my ginormous ego did start to think that this could never happen to me, but then i really started to think about it and maybe i wouldn’t be the victim (too flighty) but i could be an abuser - HORRIBLE TO SAY I KNOW! but i think that reading this story about the woman in the dream house really opened my eyes on how my behaviour truly affects people i love. if i love them, then how could i hurt them? pre-dream house flo would believe that, but post-dream house flo knows better.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - I am so glad I caught the review of this book on instagram as it just captured my interest completely and got me actively seeking this book for my shelves. I was captivated from page one and throughout Carmen's raw openness and thought processes just kept me reading. I haven't read a memoir like this before, the way she casts her eye over different things through the lens of her own experience. The subject matter of queer domestic abuse, particularly female on female, is a subject matter I have never seen actively written about in such intricacy and depth, and I am glad Carmen had the strength to open this conversation wide into the world. Because why is it so I comprehensible that abuse in a lesbian relationship can and indeed does happen, just like any relationship between two people regardless of gender. A thought provoking read that i whole heartedly recommend - I will be seeking out more of Carmen's recommendations as I feel this is a subject matter whose surface has only just been scratched!

“ . . . you can be hurt by people who look just like you. Not only can it happen, it probably will, because the world is full of hurt people who hurt people.”

so beautifully-written, brutal in its honesty, and heartbreaking.
