I genuinely can't explain why this book didn't get a higher rating from me. It's an objectively good book, in my opinion, but it didn't quite awe me the way I expected it to. If you're on the fence, read it! It's not a waste of time by any stretch of the imagination.
It should be noted that I would recommend it for readers 18+.

I was only looking for a book that would break the shit out of me and man, this one did more than that. The Nightingale made me angry, loved, heartbroken, and more importantly, it made me realize how lucky I am to be living in this kind of world where I eat three times a day and could even slack if I want to. The hardships the victims endured in wars affected me as if I too, experienced it at the same time as them, it has that much of an impact. I wasn't much of a fan of historical fiction but after reading the Nightingale, I think I am up to pick another book from this genre and cry a little or maybe more if I were given a chance to stumble upon another emotional story as beautifully written as this.

This is a 4.5 star read for me. Kristin Hannah has historically not been my favourite author so I tried to go into this story with low expectations. It started out and I remember saying to my friend, "I'm not connecting to either main character, I just don't like them". Oh man, was I wrong. This story blossoms into beautiful character development. Vianne, Isabelle, and Sophie all mature and use their resilience to transform into women who take care of themselves. Their bravery and strength are a shadow of the true bravery and strength displayed by any one and everyone affected by WWII. I really enjoyed the ending, I fell in love with the characters all over again and things were tied up very nicely. The back of the book where Kristin Hannah talks about what inspired the book was very interesting, I will definitely be checking out some of the memoirs that this story was based on!
