I love dark fairy tales and books centered around witches and thought this would be up my alley, but I had so many issues with the MC that I also rooted for her downfall - and unfortunately I don't think the audience was supposed to think her to be entitled and stupid.
Also, I am all for unconventional beauty winning but hate when the love interest man is conventional AND when the MC falls in love based off his looks???
Half of Marlinchen's character felt it was written as a self insert.
I expected some adventure, but most of the book takes place in the same two locations.

This story has dark themes woven throughout, but the way Reid pulls everything together at the end is masterful. Definitely worth the read.
I tried really hard to like this book, but I just couldn't get past the infantilization of the main character (I get that she's been locked up at home for a while, but so have her sisters and they're like. normal adult women). and the sexualization of every situation (their dad gives them a potion that will reveal if they've broken their hymen (????) and the scene is extremely weird "she gets on her knees looking up at him and sticks her soft, pink tongue out" like ew) . Also she says "blushed/flushed" about 30 times a chapter and it's a bit tired.
I dunno. I would like to try this one again sometime, but there's like a 10% chance that I actually do because it was lowkey triggering. This one really turned me off.

I wanted to like this more, but it felt very disjointed. Characters were only used to advance the plot and didn't really make an impression as they were forgotten in between scenes.

Real score 4.45. Moody, sensual, a little bit wrong, and a bit more right. Started a bit slow and you wouldn’t think the blurb and the book were the same thing, so I guess it’s lucky I don’t read too much into blurbs or reviews or scores. Me, myself and I didn’t think this was too bad, at all. I relish when something is out of the usual.
