Witi Ihimaera

4.18 AVERAGE

I don't really know what to make of Ihimaera. A couple of the stories were great, most were just OK. I'm really glad I read this as it is a very important work of New Zealand literature, but I feel like it was groundbreaking for social & political reasons, rather than the quality of its writing.

Loved this book!!! It felt so homely and cosy and reflective and was quite different which I liked!! Witi’s writing style is very unique and I’m excited to read more of his work. Only reason it got 4 stars from me is because I just didn’t like one of the short stories, but I loved all the others!!

A lovely dip into the sparkling water of Māori literature. Some of these stories were very moving and Tangi left me tear-streaked.

I feel like I'm the most generous goodreads reviewer I know but I'm just gonna start another review by saying 'I loved it'. Totally easy to read collection of short stories set in marae and rural Maori areas or w Maori protagonists returning to the marae. These were all beautiful absorbing rich short stories and I like how he wrote from many different POVs through the course of this collection.

This was fine, which is usually my stance on short stories collections I manage to finish. (Why do I keep starting them when I want longer form content??) The stories are interesting but the writing style is a little sparse for me.

a collection of short stories about growing up Māori, all beautifully written. as a white Australian who's moved to Aotearoa (NZ), i don't have any knowledge of the Māori people and their history, so this was a lovely start to my dive into NZ literature, specifically literature written by and about Māori people. can't wait to read the Whale Rider by this same author!
