This book was just really not doing it for me. I’m not sure if the audio narrator wasn’t to my style or if the writing just seemed really juvenile, but I could already tell that this wasn’t going to be a 5 star (or even 4 or 3.5 star…) read. I do have the physical copy from a thrift store so I may pick it back up but… my hold for Yellowface just came in so I have other things I’d much rather read!

Honestly, I'm not the right person to write a review about this book. My thoughts are not OwnVoices in the slightest, so I'll keep it incredibly brief:

This book is hard to read. It tackles a lot--a LOT-- of really difficult racial and political topics. If you think you're about to read a cute YA romcom, just know that's not what you'll be getting. The romance is minimal, the family is priority, and the hard conversations take center stage.

I enjoyed the almost dark teen humor and the author's way of writing. However, I don't think I would be desperate to pick up the next book in the series.

The overt racism by his parents was just a lot & it just no longer became something light hearted that i could listen to. The audio was nice though & I do recommend it if you want to give the book a try
