I understand why this book is so highly praised and although I didn’t read it in high school I think many should read it as high school students. We see signs of depression from an introverted student who is our narrator. We don’t understand her reasoning for not speaking until later on. She didn’t have friends and is an outcast who people speculate is “weird” or “not worthy of friends”. I really loved this book but check the trigger warning before reading. I think any age should read this to get a better perspective on what others may be going through.

i don't have anything nice to say, so i'm not gonna say anything at all... have a nice day everyone

I read this when I was young so I don't remember much, but I really want to reread it some day.

The problem persists, which makes this story timeless and relevant. Creative use of layout moves the story along and reinforces the reluctance of Melinda to talk.

such a hard read, but such an important one. one of those books that i feel like everyone should read in their lifetime.
