Read this in one sitting. The progression of the main character's depression and acceptance was very realistic and added to the arc of this story. I am shocked that it is a banned book. Every middle school and high school student should have to read this book.

I love this book. I love how the character of Melinda was created by a nightmare the author had.i can really relate to this character and love how this book is written can’t wait to read more of her books.
I'd probably give this another star but I'm not a big fan of YA. It was interesting and a quick read. And the author did a great job making incredibly frustrating characters (like the parents).

I’ve had this book since high school and randomly decided to finally read it in full today. Such a good read, I wish I read it when I first bought it.
OVERALL IMPRESSION: Every high school should have this book on their required reading list. It shows that you never know what anyone is going through and you shouldn't judge people before you know their story. This book is filled with emotion and I believe that it depicts how many teenagers feel, even if they never experience anything near as traumatic as Melinda did. High school is a rough time where teens are trying to find themselves and figure out how to deal with emotions and life and they don't always have someone they can talk to about it. This book taught me that when I have kids, I need to make sure I don't get wrapped up in my own life so much that I'm not there for them and they know they always have someone to come to.
CHARACTERS: Mr Freeman is my favorite character. I feel like he is the only supportive character in the book. He forces Melinda to face her emotions/past without even realizing it.
Melinda's parents make me angry. They're so wrapped up in their own worlds that they don't even realize that Melinda is crying out for help in the only way she knows how (by staying silent).
COVER: The cover is really symbolic of the book. I love the tree, as that is a big part of this story, but I also love how the tree covers her mouth.
MOVIE COMPARISSON: When I was reading the interview at the back of the book, I discovered that a movie had been made starring Kristen Stewart. I actually like the movie quite a bit, but as usual the book was much better. I don't like the way the movie portrayed Andy, he just didn't come off the same way as he did in the book. If you liked the book, I would suggest giving the movie a try.

Wow. All I can say. I immediately connected to the main character, Laurie’s depiction of the hells of high school is so accurate, at least where I’m concerned having been in about the same grade as her timeline. The emotions and actions of Melinda broke my heart, as well as the fact that no one seemed to notice she was in so much pain. I so badly wanted to reach through this book and wrap my arms around her. As a mom of three girls, one going into ninth grade this year I realized my duty to take note of changes in their behavior. To be open, to forge a bond that they know they can come to me unashamed and I will listen and believe them.
This is a definite must read.

I can’t explain why, but this book was so addictive. I just couldn’t stop reading. Maybe it was the writing style or the sarcastic humor of the main character. Even though the main character and I are very different, this book still felt so relatable. I loved it and highly recommend it to everyone, especially those struggling with inner… things.
