أجد في نفسي هذه الفترة نهما لقراءة أمهات الكتب الأدبية العالمية، الكلاسيكيات. ولما رأيت كتاب النبي أمامي، لم أكن متحمسا لقراءته حقيقةً، وإنما دفعني لقراءته رغبتي بأن أقول أني قرأته إن كُنت سُئلت عنه، فهذه من الكتب القليلة التي يعرفها الأجانب أنها من تأليف عربي -وإن كان الكتاب إنجليزيا-. أذكر في المدرسة، في صف ١١ سألني أستاذ الأدب إن كُنت قد قرأت كتاب النبي، فأجبت نافيا، وبقي هذا معي حتى الآن، وكان دافعا قويا للقراءة.
بداية الكتاب لم تكن مشجّعة، إذ رأيت الأفكار المطروحة أقرب للبساطة والسذاجة، أشياء يقولها المتفائلون. وبقي شعور يعاودني خلال القراءة مفاده: أن لا شيء من المعاني المقدّمة بعظيم أو جديد أو بمعنى أدق profound.
لكن ما سرق حبي هو عذوبة الكتابة. يا إلهي ما أجملها. وصف شاعري سحري. ومع كثرة الصفحات، لابد وأن تصدف بعض المعاني الجميلة أيضا.
