I put this off for slightly longer than I planned, due to the end of the first book. The relationship between the MCs was so good in book one, and I knew, from the ending, that everything would fall apart.

This seemed to drag slightly for the first 20%, then it picked up. The first bit where Oraya and Raihn were figuring out their new dynamic, and Oraya hated him.

The last, say, 30% was superb, though. The energy and the speed of the plot had me going, and going, and going! I loved how we sort of ended up in the same place as the end of the first book in a certain way to do with Raihn.

I also loved that Vale and Lillith were there, and I was grateful I'd been told to read Six Scorched Roses before this one.

Even if i didn't realise who they were until about halfway through!.

I love a duology, with a completely finished, fully rounded story hashed out over the course of two books. Perhaps because I was already familiar with the characters, this book hooked me much sooner than the first. I loved that it was enemies to lovers and back to enemies again as Oraya and Raihn are forced into a situation of having to rely on one another in order to survive. But when someone has broken your trust, it becomes difficult to reconcile the person you believed they were with the actions that hurt you.

As with the first book, action sequences, magic, evil enemies, and star crossed love fill the pages of this intriguing and addictive fantasy. I loved the themes of self discovery and finding your worth, as well as that of having the courage to learn from and move on from your past. Characters I thought irredeemable became those I could understand, and characters who seemed trustworthy proved not to be. Overall, this was a great mix of action and character development that kept me interested throughout. I will eventually read more of this series, but love that they are written in a way that lets you break them up into chunks rather than having to read 5+ books back to back.
