Interesting take on the history of bookbinding - I learned a lot more than I knew before, took some notes on important figures and manuscripts that contributed to the evolution of the art, but I disagree with the author on some points of the extremely subjective beauty, lol. Some of his favorite texts (the Doves Bible as an example) are pretty in a sense but nearly illegible compared to other works published at the time he wrote this book (the 1920s). Half the intrigue was seeing how the standards and principles of typography and book art have changed in the last hundred years.
