Initially wasn't a fan of this one, seemed to jump around A LOT and kind of random but I ended up liking this one even more than the first. I really enjoyed the continued refinement of the sci-fi concepts, weapon development, human like qualities of the probes. This one felt the like the chapters were even shorter in an annoying way, but again the world building more than makes up for it

It had been a while since I read the first book, and this one starts pretty much immediately after the first book ends. Despite my being rusty on the characters and events, I was able to get back into the swing of things pretty quickly. I like how this installment was a little more serious and dealt with some of the consequences of choices in the first book. It still had humor, though, which I also appreciated. Given the ending, I’m going to need to read book 3 at some point soon, but I have a different book lined up to read next. The audiobook narrator is great, though I do find listening to these a bit challenging in terms of keeping the characters and places straight - and I never remember the dates from one chapter to the next. Thankfully, the author includes enough other details to make these issues minor, and they don’t impact the enjoyment of listening to the story.

I'm still deeply enjoying this series even though I had the painful realization that I'm picturing Bob as my stupid not-really-brother. It's a great book for philosophical and anthropological concepts. I don't always agree with the Bobs but I can see how the get to their choices. I feel like I would have a much more Laissez-Faire attitude to the many ephemeral species of the universe.
