I would give this a 3.5, I liked the story but I found the ending incredibly unsatisfying. I felt like the story was sweet but there were still some unanswered questions. I also found some parts of this book hard to read but overall it was still a sweet story.

This book made me cry so. many. times. It was real in a way I would not expect of a book whose main character is a girl that will not stop quoting Shakespeare, and mostly listens to jazz. But the characters acted in a way that was so familiar, and instead of just stoically taking suffering, they were pulled down by it into making ever worse decisions. While not pretty, I felt it really showed how not dealing with problems as they arise makes it much harder to deal with further ones. Overall: very true to life in all of its sadness and loss, but also hopeful in its own way.

Wow like WOW i think this is one of my fav reads ever. And DEFINITELY something I’d reread.
I would say a million things about this book but i really don’t really feel like making myself cry.

"That's the thing about words: they can leave you both unscathed and completely gutted. Girls wage endless wars with their voices, tearing you apart without touching you at all (250)."
In When You Were Everything, Ashley Woodfolk captures all that is girl friendship. The way girls can feed each others' souls; the way girls can tear each other into pieces.
Cleo and Layla's friendship is at the core of the story, moving between the then and now timelines seamlessly. Teens will identify with the way they feel about each other, along with the way they treat each other.
Need a book to read while sheltering in place? Order this one. Best way to forget the craziness that is going on in the world is to escape into the pages of a good book. And this one is a great book.

this is as high school as it gets and i hated the characters but also they were so real, layla was annoying af she is most hated and creo you are annoying but a little less (you’re just like me) this is YA so i shouldn’t be surprised but some stuff of here is so cringy but also deeply realistic i took it a little personal
I'm not crying.. You're crying!
This book broke my heart and I couldn't put it down. When You Were Everything follows Cleo Baker, a teenage girl going through a friend-breakup. Doesn't sound very emotional and tragic, but trust me, this book will make you want to cry.
The writing, character development and plot pulled me and were done so well. My heart broke multiple times for Cleo and she felt like a fully-realised flawed but relatable character. If you've ever lost a best friend, you can sympathise will her immediately and watching the breakup happen over the two timelines, it really made me sad.
But what I did appreciate about this book, is that it isn't just about a girl losing her best friend. It's also about her coming to terms with losing important people in her life and moving on. Finding new friends, creating new memories, dealing with the pain. This book was just so beautiful and I need to read more from this author!
