I have long been a fan of Amanda Lovelace, and this has been on my radar to read for years.
"Break Your Glass Slippers" is the first book in the "You Are Your Own Fairy Tale" collection from Amanda Lovelace. Amanda is known for her poetry and beautiful prose, and this collection is a merging of both. This reads more like an epic: chapters that are long poetry, but still eloquently strung together.
I did not realize this was not a "traditional" poetry collection until I started to read it, and I was pleasantly surprised by its format! I love when authors take risks and try new things, and this felt like the perfect melting of Amanda's talent and a step in a new direction.
As much as I love Amanda's writing style, I feel like their work all sounds really similar, just worded ever so slightly different. It kind of feels like once you read one collection from Amanda, you have read them all, and I really felt that way about this specifically. I think this is beautiful, and if it is the first thing you pick up from her, it will be more exciting for you, but I felt like I had already read this from Amanda.
I am still very interested to read more from Amanda, but I will probably wait awhile before I pick up anymore poetry from them.

I've read and enjoyed Amanda Lovelace's poetry in the past, so when I needed a poetry bundle for the POPSUGAR challenge my thoughts went immediately to this author. I had Break Your Glass Slippers on my TBR, which worked for other challenges as well, so I decided to just dive in and get my first non fiction read of 2024 in early. Those who have read her poetry before are probably aware of her specific poetry style and some might say it's not 'real' poetry. I don't agree with that statement; I think the more simplistic style only gives more power to the words chosen as well as the message behind them. Break Your Glass Slippers is the first bundle of another feminist poetry series, and it's another powerful one. It talks about heavier topics including toxic relationships, body shaming, abuse and suicidal thoughts, but it also gives a message of hope and fighting for your own selfworth. It's a quick read with a strong message, and I loved how the poetry incorporated parts of the original Cinderella story. The illustrations also complemented the poems really well! All in all another successful poetry bundle.

Gorgeous illustrations and such a real perspective on the feeling of being a lovesick for someone you maybe haven’t even been given the real chance to love. Very empowering in terms of self love and not giving others the power to hurt you, but I found I enjoyed a lot of the sadder poems simply because of how Amanda put the feelings that feel too complex to explain into a few simple words, summarizing what we’ve all felt before perfectly. Loved it. Definitely one of my new favourite authors.

I love how the voice is from the author herself which made more impact. But, this seems more like a post from social media instead of a poem that has depth. Though, I can't wait to read and listen to the other 2 books of this series because some are relatable and I want to give the benefit of the doubt it will be the same as this first book.

Audiobook: I thought Lovelace (who narrated the book herself) did an excellent job. However, I am not sure her poetry is really meant to be listened to without the text in front of you. I wanted to see the structure of the poem and be able to fully appreciate the writing. (I would say this is probably true of any poetry that is not specifically written as spoken word poetry though.)
Content: I was excited to receive this arc as I teach a high school level poetry class and many of my students rave about Lovelace's poems. I do see the appeal as she is honest and edgy and talks about real issues. However, her poetry is not for me personally. To me, it read like a series of inspirational Instagram posts and though the sentiments are true and important it was very surface level. I wanted her to play more off of the fairytale inspiration, but instead the takeaway was: life isn't a fairytale and you need to love yourself. As I said, I get why my students like her, but I am not sure adults would find her writing worthwhile.

I really loved this. I absolutely devoured it and love when audios are narrated by the author--especially for poetry. It just does so much to really tell the story the way it is meant to be told. This book seriously had me feeling really good at the end and kind of empowered. I definitely recommend it!
