This story revolves around Rachel Abbott, a woman who has been living a seemingly perfect life as the wife of a prominent politician. However, her world turns upside down when she discovers her husband's infidelity when accidentally send a pic meant for his mistress. When she confronts him, he wants her "play" married until his mayoral election is over.

Determined to reclaim her life and identity, Rachel begins on a journey of self-discovery. Along the way, she encounters Nathan, a young artist with his own set of personal struggles and daddy issues. Rachel tries to avoid Nathan and the potent magnetism they possess; however, they have to work together for a gala. This pushes them closer together. Politics, scandal, and forbidden love are the themes of this book.

If you enjoy politics or messy family drama with a capital D (looking at you scandal or housewives fans) this one is going to be right up your alley. This is one of those summer reads great for the pool or your couch just get ready to not move for a couple hours- I was drawn in from the start and couldn’t look away. We get one shitty husband set in the political world but then we get two artists in different places in their lives and their work. We also get forbidden love and age gap with a younger man, oh, and more family drama. Nathan is the protective-passion lover. I loved how Regina weaved this all into play with the rich and political society along with a bit of the art world.

We also get some great steamy romance but do note there is cheating in this one. I couldn’t get enough and can’t believe this is her debut- I can’t wait to see what is next!

Overall: 4/5
Spice level: 2/5
Tropes: cheating (not between MCs), age gap (woman is older)

Representation: this is a story between a Mexican American man and a Black American woman

CW: discussion of being unhoused, parental death

Age gap with the woman being older is not a trope we see often enough. It's a favorite of mine.

I was skeptical of the cheating trope, but it's not between the MCs and the marriage becomes for show because of politics. Made it bearable.

The friendship and camaraderie that blooms between Nathan and Rachel is really sweet and much needed for both of them. They have chemistry but the spice isn't as spicy as I'd hoped.

One thing I loved is that they had art in common. Once it was apparent, it ignited something between them.

The author navigated Rachel's history wiry care, telling a history of teen pregnancy and a period of being unhoused.

There was amazing character development and an interesting plot.
