"For those of us lucky enough to choose how work fits into our lives, the most important thing is that we actively make a choice. If we don’t, work can expand like a gas and fill any available space."
Very US-centric (as I had expected) but still made me reconsider some aspects of my relationship with my job. Kind of a shame though how most people mentioned in the book seemed to be high earners. I don't really see how people working paycheck to paycheck could apply most of the advice in there. Overall still an interesting, short read.

I started this audiobook when I was feeling sort of jaded from the work I am doing and also feeling quite upset with myself for not being better at it. Listening to this book really helped me see work as just work and not as a way to raise my self-esteem or achieve any goals I have. That made me feel less bad about the amount I was contributing and able to contribute (and honestly, I was contributing enough given how much I was being compensated).
One of the main things I learnt is to separate work from your sense of self. If something that is so out of control (because your work is dictated by managers, company goals, etc.) is so tied up with how you see yourself, then it becomes a big problem. I identified that this was why I was so upset and feeling lost, I didn't feel in control.
This book isn't very long, nor does it include a whole lot of tips, so it was a very easy read. All of it really serves to make the point of disconnecting self from work through narrating various stories about various people. I think it was a good way to drive a point, and it didn't make me feel so overwhelmed at the end. Perfect for people who are experiencing burnout or about to from their work/career.

I love the idea of finding a good enough job and using it as a means to the rest of your life. It's a concept I've been looking into more and finding this book was an interesting supplement to it.
One thing I found frustrating is through the characters that were chosen as the focus for this book, they were pretty much all independently well off, if not wealthy, so they could take the risk of quitting their jobs and finding something else. I don't think it adequately looked at the barriers most face in taking that leap, which is that most people can't afford to and there is no safety net for them if the risk fails.

Didn't really add anything new to the conversation, but a good message to consume every so often. Probably could have gotten the same takeaways from a blog post.

I liked the storytelling format, but it started to feel a little repetitive at some point? like the stories blended together and were too similar and my enthusiasm for the book decreased as it went on. I liked the social science aspects earlier on (why americans value work so much). also, I do think the book is more applicable to a specific (corporate) audience but I’m in that audience so it worked for me
