i really liked this

it was quick
snappy
and visceral

being a fan
of horror movies

it was easy
to imagine
how these
incidents
might play out

similar
vibes to
to bent neck lady
from hill house

and while
the parents
were insufferable
bela's perspective
and reaction
to the incidents

felt earned
and honest

Best horror book I have ever read. I highly recommend you read this with your eye balls as the formatting is laid out through the viewpoint of the 8 year old protagonist. I attempted to listen to the audiobook and did not get far on the story. There were a couple of times when I got creeped out.

The book was dumb. The pacing was fast. The end was interesting. It felt like a novella or a movie but was instead a full length book. And the end, someone explain. I don’t get it.

I should probably clarify. I say it was dumb because the entire book is essentially “go here! Oh no other mommy! Run away. Go there! Oh no other mommy! Run away (Repeat 5x) Secrets come out. Dun dun duuuun.”

I hated all of these characters and the words "daddo" and "piqued" are annoying as all heck

While the story was appealing to start with it quickly become increasingly predictable as the book goes on. It is written from the point of view of an 8 year old (I had to look that up, I wouldn't have guessed from the way she is written) but her speech and behavior feels very inconsistent in age. There is also a scean that could be very triggering to CSA survivors involving her sitting on someone else's lap and peeing.  It's not written as sexual, but it is also very uncomfortable.

I enjoyed this book, it started out really strong but fell a little flat for me towards the end. 4 stars because it truly creeped me out and had me nervous about going to the bathroom in the middle of the night! I enjoy Josh Malerman's writing and liked that this book was written from the child's point of view which made it more interesting. Super creepy!

This was a little overhyped for me!
