I was expecting something magical, but no, this is "literature". Not much interested, so abandoning this book.

Bleak, dark and beautiful. Blood soaked, gothic noir, landscape prose about family, greed, wrath and the ties that bind us. Exquisitely written.

If you're in the mood for some beautiful darkness, give this one a go.

Started super strong-enchanting even- and the pages just flew by. Really easy to read and beautiful writing til the end, but the story itself became less and less fantastical/wise/interesting and more “normal” as the story continued, with the last 10 pages or so after the fire really dragging. I’m sick tho, shrug

A dark, mythic tale in which you know from the outset that something terrible is going to happen. The jumps in the timeline only confirm this, but you have to wait until almost the end to find out quite how terrible the thing is. It's written in a way that means that it feels slightly out of step with modern times, which give it the mythic quality I mentioned earlier. It's clearly modern, but there are times when you could easily forget that, and the characters are most definitely not, rooted firmly in the land and the traditions it has thrown up. It was an uneasy read, but very powerful.

A beautiful book with beautiful writing. The pacing was a bit off. It was very gripping at the beginning, but the middle part felt a bit slow and flat. The pacing was a bit to fast again at the end.
