Really enjoyed this book with the language and setting being my favourite aspects. The descriptions of nature were very vivid and emotive. I also really enjoyed the character of the father who was so conflicting ( a formidable boxer but also a very loving father seemingly accepting of his sons fluid gender identity . ) I found the setting (time period) of the book very hard to pin down but I think this is because of the noir style used. The culminating scenes were very well written although I wish the future excerpts had been built on more. Overall a very compelling and interesting book.

I really enjoyed me, it did find it hard to rationalise how it happened to be set in the present and that it wasn’t historical fiction.

This one broke all the rules from the beginning. It's amazing how all of my expectations- plot wise, character wise, style wise- were pulled apart and were never met. Boy! What a ride!

This was just okay for me.

Literary fiction that deals with a family where the single father is a giant who is prone to violence as a means of supporting his family, and his son and daughter who are very protective of each other.

There were a couple of "out-of-left-field" moments that I felt detracted from the story, but if you like dark family drama set in the UK, it might be worth a shot.
