Vrlo, vrlo, vrlo dobar debi. Nije čudo što se roman našao u užem izboru za Bukera. Mozlijeva ima lep, svedeno liričan glas i njime uspeva nešto na šta se ne nailazi tako često – napisala roman je potpuno izolovan od vremena. Iako se na papiru odvija u sadašnjem trenutku, atmosfera je takva – maglovita, kišna, šumska, prepuna mračne liričnosti – da potpuno sakriva taj jeftini dojam vremena i, uz par anahronizama, radnja vrlo lako može da bude smeštena i pre pedeset, i pre sto, pa i pre dvesta godina. Uz to, mislim da Mozlijevoj ide na ruku i svojevrsna jedinstvenost pripovedanja: pripovedač je dečak koji priča sa izrazitim ženskim sentimentom i ona to vrlo lukavo ovde obrće u svojoj korist.

Ovako je to malo slabije, ali Fiona Mozli ne da obećava nego to obećanje kao da je unapred i ispunila sa Elmetom.

I had been looking for an absorbing, escapist read. Last week The Economist reviewed this book, giving it a glowing review and noting that it was from a new author and longlisted for the Booker prize. It sounded interesting, and as a bonus was set in my new home of Yorkshire. It was released on Thursday, arrived Friday, and by Sunday I had finished reading it.
Early on I was skeptical. In addition to some overlong descriptions, I found a few typos or similar minor imperfections, though I enjoyed her prose style from the beginning—at times the rhythm and cadence reminded me of Virginia Woolf. But then I got my wish. The book sucked me in and spat me out when it was done with me. I tore through the last two thirds in a single sitting. It was both timeless and topical, dreamlike and hyperrealistic.

I picked up this book cuz I liked the cover and I stand by that as a decision. The bare empty trees drew me in, and the story very much captures that slow, atmospheric vibe I was looking for. The characters were interesting and complex. Overall very good read. Not horror but very moody.
Very lyrical, poetical novel. The setting is modern day, but Daniel, his sister, and father live in a different world, an old-fashion world. The conflict between these two worlds is what kept me reading. Daniel's life is so uncommon that you have to wonder is it possible to escape today's world.
Fiona Mozley's prose put me in the story. I saw the house they built, the dark woods, and the people. It will be interesting to see how her writing evolves.
Four stars because I found the tale slow at times.
