I'm glad to say that it is still as good as it was when I read it the first time when I was 11 years old.

Gostei do livro. Lê-se muito rápido e entretém mas não é nada de espetacular. Mesmo assim fiquei com vontade de ler o seguinte porque acaba com um enorme cliff-hanger.

First saw this series of books in Italy could not understand a word but was attracted by the front covers. I guessed, of course, that they were written for children but I enjoyed the Harry Potter books so thought I would take a chance and ordered the first one the hardback version really by accident but am glad that I did as they are lovely to keep. They are aimed at a somewhat younger audience than Harry Potter but nonetheless I decided to read it. They made me nostalgic for the days when I was enraptured by Enid Blyton's novels. I love the illustrations nicely drawn in pencil adding to the enjoyment of the story. I liked the characters of Jason, Julia and Rick and not too many adults getting in the way as the parents are soon packed off to town on an errand. The story very much evoked "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" especially with the theme of youth and having to believe in the magic in order for it to work. I would highly recommend this book, great fun and the final chapter makes it clear that the adventure has only just begun. In fact this first book is really just an introduction to the 'proper' story to come. There is no bad language, or anything scary really so can be read by all ages. Great to be read out loud and the short chapters I would say would be excellent for this. Will definitely be reading on.

My rating: 4.5/6

As soon as I picked up The Door To Time I wished that I had a chance to read it during my childhood. I’ve always loved a good adventure mixed with mystery and I can feel that I would’ve been absolutely thrilled with the series about Ulysses Moore. That said, I still enjoyed it very much as an adult.

The book definitely felt like an opening to a bigger series, a sort of introduction. I felt like the author focused on introducing the characters and setting, and only gave us a little taste of the things that are about to come. And personally, I can’t wait to find out! The story was engaging and woke up a little adventurer in me. I was curious to see how the characters unveiled the big mystery of Ulysses Moore. Even though, as a book mainly targeted to the teens, the writing was simple, I didn’t mind it. I was pulled in by the beautiful setting and the characters’ adventures.

The main characters, Rick, Jason and Julia, were nicely written. I felt like only Rick got some development but all three had distinctive treats and I enjoyed their interactions. At first I thought that Jason’s character will go the route that particularly irritates me, that he’ll be the one who’s taking risk without thinking about the consequences and who never learns (I’m looking at you Fablehaven), but I’m glad that Baccalario made him more complex.

I also have to mention the amazing illustrations and the overall composition of the book. Despite the fact that the story itself is engaging enough, the design really adds to it and the overall experience. The book truly looks like an old diary and I could almost feel the scratches on the cover when I touched it.

To sum up, The Door To Time is a great beginning of an exciting series and a thrilling adventure, that all small and big discoverers should enjoy. I can’t wait to pick up The Long-Lost Map myself :)

the characters are interesting i guess, but the story doesn't start until the end for some reason.
i think i need to stop reading middle-grade books.
