Of all of Larry Niven's books, this is the one I think about most. Others have commented on the quality of the writing (not great), plotting (meh), and character development (never Niven's strong suit). But this was the first time I encountered the idea that humans might be strangers to Earth, and it knocked me back on my heels.
5 star - Perfect
4 star - i would recommend
3 star - good
2 star - struggled to complete
1 star - could not finish

One of the very best books Niven has written, I read it again every two or so years.
Author's Envy! I wish I'd written this book! Here's why: http://www.mark-hodder.com/authorsenvy/protector.html
At this date (July 2013) I re-read this novel, for the umpteenth time, after a gap of a decade or more. It is an excellent read, written by one of the best SF authors of our day, in his most productive period, the 70s. The story covers the human interaction with our long lost forebears, the Pak protectors, our 'angelic' super strong and intelligent guardians, who are or were the next stage in the human aging process. They are genetically dedicated to protecting their descendants (hence their indicative appellation).
The novel covers two centuries of time, and logically presents both what a human protector would do to protect the Earth humans, and what the protectors of the home planet, far away and close to the galactic core, would do to protect their own families. Needless to say, the two groups of protectors have different genocidal agendas.
Cleverly written, with a rapid pace. Recommended.

Mediocre first contact / seeding the galaxy story from the '70s. I'm always surprised how badly the sci-fi authors in the 70's missed the internet and the miniaturization of computers - Niven definitely does this. Really, it's just a boring story though. It's fine. Not awful, not great.

Interesting idea, well-written, not really thought-provoking but I've read it three times, with a decade between each to be sure I've forgotten all the spoilers except the main one.
