I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I've not read anything quite like this before--I guess the Hilary Mantel comparison is most apt? The pacing lags in the middle of the book, and the bawdy talk gets boring after a while, but Simnel's development and the hilarious-yet-dark dialogue make this a compelling read.

It took me just over two months to get to 77% (already a bad sign) and I’ve just decided to not finish this after the main character spends more than half the book pining for his love (Joan) and then does an about-face and sleeps with the first woman to throw herself at him. The characterisation (the best thing going for this book) was rich and vibrant but the story was so repetitive, going round in circles. Then there was the near constant repetition of puissant/puissance. Much too long as well.
