I read the book because I’d like to pull back on my use of social media and to feel less bound to my phone. The book has some good ideas about how to accomplish that, starting with finding meaningful leisure activities so that the minimalism isn’t about giving something up as much as it is making time for enjoyable and meaningful activity. I listened to the audiobook and will hunt down a paper copy so I can flag the actions he recommends, and I’m looking forward to giving it a try.

It's ok. A good book about why not to use social media. The theory is good, but each rule comes with an unnecessary and extremist story.

I heard 80% of the book and read the rest.
Digital Minimalism is a mix of a new gen podcast on technology use (sometimes sounding like a sermon but most of the time presenting a logical argument) and a well researched thesis on role of technology and attention economy in our lives mixed with the wisdom of out yester years.
It draws from previous works on leisure, mindful living, community building and such. It is peppered with various case studies and profiles of individuals who have strived to do something extraordinary. For this, I'd recommend digital Minimalism to anyone who might want to become more mindful of their technology usage.

PS read/listen and take some notes about the actionable steps, this book is only as useful as you'd make it.

This book is the best guide in taking control of your digital habits. I really enjoyed how the book offers insight on how to use technology to enhance your life rather than cutting it out completely. It also offers practical advice on how to tackle excessive use of social media and glowing screens.

Cal Newport likes to drone at times, but I really enjoyed this book in large part because I agree with many of the principles he espouses. For the past decade or so, I have been known among my peers as being "chronically online", and it has taken a lot of humility and introspection to admit to myself that my social media habits and phone use have hijacked much of my life, not just my attention span and overall mental health but also my overall character and many of my relationships with other people.

I've already learned beforehand a lot of the points raised here by Newport, but I found his arguments to be compelling and validating. But two new key takeaways from this book I have are one, social media is not as important to cultivate a rich social life as tech companies would convince us it is, and two, it consumes so much more of our time than it should. From recently limiting my social media use with Screenzen, for example, I've realized I get pretty much the same value from using Instagram for 10 minutes tops in a day as I do when I've used it 4 hours on average. Yikes to my old self, but we're here to learn.

Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to reevaluate their relationship with social media and smartphones and wants to get more out of life beyond the screen
