Bluebeard's Bride is a remarkable product. It has received a lot of kudos and accolades, and yet sometimes it still feels insufficient with how affecting and impressive a product it is.

For those unfamiliar, Bluebeard's Bride is a roleplaying game based upon a folktale. A young woman is married to a mysterious and ominous man. He takes her off to his manor or castle and she explores the home as she is left on her own. In her exploration she encounters dark spirits and malevolent beings. All of these point to the truth of Bluebeard and the fate of his former wives.

The Book of Lore is a short story using the game's system in order to tell the tale. The sort of horror that it elicits is impeccable, in my opinion. The fear is the sort that makes your stomach twist. Not to mention, the novelty of the monstrous encounters were creative and inspiring.

One thing I really wish to underscore is the impact of the design and the art. The way the book is laid out has a tremendous impact in making it all the more effective. The scrawled words of warning, the foreboding text, and the stark images contribute to really tell the story.

I'd highly recommend this book for fans of the game and those interested in a quick bit of feminine horror.
